5 Signs of Depression
Depression is one of the most common diagnosed mental health issues in the world. It is often defined as a mood disorder that doesn’t discriminate and affects every age group. In many cases, a person may be experiencing a present stressor, which could negatively impact his/her emotions. Concern arises when this mode or state of mind persist for extended periods. Since there is some misconception about depression, in many cases the signs overlooked. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, there is still a stigma in society associated with mental illness. In some cultures, when members report these symptoms a person may be viewed as weak or perceived as being “crazy”, so many are reluctant to look for help. It is not uncommon for a depressed person to feel reluctant to share their emotions for fear of being judged. Secondly, in some families, depression is not viewed as an illness, but seen as an excuse for behavior considered as lazy or weak. Regardless of your current beliefs, it is important to understand that depression is a serious problem that often requires medical and psychological treatment. Changes in appetite
A common sign of depression is changes in one’s appetite. This could include not eating enough or even overeating. These changes may also be accompanied by changes in weight, so some people struggling with depression may become thinner and others often put on extra weight.
Changes in sleep patterns
This could occur in combination with other symptoms, but changes in sleep habits may also be related to depression. Some depressed individuals report sleeping too much, but often wake up feeling fatigue. Others people may develop insomnia.
Fatigue
Fatigue is another symptom often acknowledged by depressed individuals. In most cases, getting adequate rest or being overly active is not the issue.
Lack of Interest
Many depressed people complain about not enjoying activities that normally brought them pleasure. Therefore, it is not uncommon for these individuals to report feelings of boredom, emptiness and/or lack of motivation.
Thoughts of worthlessness
Thoughts worthlessness and hopelessness are commonly reported by depressed individuals. These type of thoughts may be verbalized when the person feels powerless to change their current situation. Finally, sometimes depression are exhibited through emotions such as, irritability, anger and agitation.
